The Un-Ordinary: An Anti-Gatekeeping Series on Freelancing (Featuring Hanna Zajac)

Meet Hanna.

Hanna, designer originally from Melbourne Australia and now living in Los Angeles, is dedicated to helping business owners with all of their design needs.

What's the craziest design request you've ever received?

Actually one of my latest clients which was designing all of their office windows and they had multiple offices. So gathering all the sizing for it all, creating the designs and adjusting them to fit the windows. That was definitely one of my largest scale projects I've ever taken on, and many hours later I finally wrapped it up recently.

What do you do when you get stuck creatively?

I usually look for inspiration online whether that's scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram and I enjoy checking out other designers' work I admire. I'll also take a break and then try again with some upbeat music to motivate myself to keep going!

If you could design a new emoji, what would it be?

Anything blue!! We need more designer emojis!

What are the most common forms of gatekeeping you've observed?
How do you think we as a community could change them?

I think the biggest misconception is the hard work that goes into being a freelancer and running your own business. I find that a lot of time spent is not necessarily shared on social media like managing and communicating with clients, maintaining and promoting your business, as well as the hours spent on each client's work. Social media doesn't always show the reality of freelancers that can sometimes be difficult to stay motivated and keep going. To change this, I think there should be a better awareness for freelancers that there are times when things are challenging and the need to have support from others, to not be afraid to share when life gets full on and know we are doing our best!

What's your greatest pain point in managing your business?

I often struggle with pricing for my clients, when it comes to their specific needs and budget. I find the price varies with the scope of the project, timeline and what they can afford, which is why I love Roam as they have an amazing feature on their platform for pricing projects that is reliable!
